Hi!

I bought some bb7 avid brakes and it seems that the opening isn’t going big enough for the discs?

I’ve played around with it for around 6 hours now…getting a little frustrated.

As you can see the ‘piston’ isn’t going as far back as the one in the photo? I’ve adjusted each side of the adjustments with no luck. Even taken them apart.

Is this a common issue? Or have I received dud ones?

When they’re on my wheels they just scrape and I can’t adjust them at all.

Thanks

Red nob by middle finger needs to be backed off all the way then adjusted once on the bike. If the piston isn’t going back in properly you can push it back in gently with a wrench. When you attach the cable to the calliper be sure you’re not over tightening initially, since that will engage the brake before you pull the lever.

Since you’ve wound out the adjusters try move the main lever that the cable pulls on and see the piston moves out slightly before it moves back in. My BB7s do that and I found to get the most rotor clearance I needed a little bit of cable tension on them.

I don’t know if it will make up the difference though. It looks like the piston needs to move out quite a lot.

Assuming adjustment knobs are backed out all the way (BTW make sure you haven’t backed out just the plastic part but rather you made sure that the red knobs were engaging with the metal part underneath as you were backing them out – hard to explain but sometimes the red plastic caps can come loose and you think you’re backing out the pads but it’s really just the red plastic cap spinning and coming loose), you can try pressing a flathead in there to see if they back out.
