Hi I am very new to biking and I dented my outer chainring against a curb when had an accident. Can I just replace the outer chainring or do I replace the entire crankset?

It is a LCS 43T/52T, 170 MM and is a stock part of a Mercier Nano. Sorry if this is a dumb question I just am a bit confused and don’t want to spend more money than I need.

  1. You can replace it. Just make sure you get one with the same BCD (chainring diameter) usually 110 but it’s probably stamped into the chainring somewhere. You can measure it. There are plenty of videos online but Sheldon browns website is a great wealth of info

If all five arms that the chainring attaches to are in plane with each other, you only need to replace the chainring. Judging by the fact that your inner chainring does not share the lateral movement of the outer chainring, I’d assume your crank is fine.

And an aside, dented doesn’t exactly fit this scenario. To say the chainring is bent is more suitable.

  3. If I were you, I would try to straighten it. You can use an adjustable spanner for this, which you set to the thickness of the sprocket and gently bend gradually in different places. You don’t lose anything, if it doesn’t work you’ll still have to replace it.
