I am in my mid-30s and have not had a bike to call my own for about 20 years. I'd like to get something budget friendly that I can take around the neighborhood with my kids and the occasional longer ride on a canal path with the wife. Plus, something I can connect to a trainer in the winter to use in the house.

The FX1 Disc Gen 3 caught my eye as it's in my price range ($750 is pushing it) and new (I do not have good luck with used so would like to stay away). Do you more avid bikers recommend something like this for a newbie?

Yes, I think this would fit your purpose quite well. This and the specialized sirrus line are really quite capable, can be fast as well as can fit big tires and do rail trails and whatnot.

The link you posted has it on sale for $499. Great beginner bike IMO. Make sure you get the correct size.

I recently bought one and am happy with it. As a casual rider just wanting to get out and about, I don’t think you can get much better value new for $500. Trek’s customer service is reportedly very good.

Many people might suggest buying used for that budget, and other people report that the fx2 has better components and is generally worth the extra money (while the fx3 is not really worth the extra), but you’ve stated your budget and that you prefer new, so as it was for me, I think it’s about the best choice.
