Hello, I have a stump jumper with one of those fox future shocks with the brain. Its leaking and collapses after riding for a few minutes. I've been looking online to try to find how to rebuild/service/replace the shock on my bike. The shock is this one. This shock seems like its outdated and no longer used on modern stump jumpers. Should I bother fixing it? Should I upgrade to something else? What shocks are good nowadays? (I just started riding again after about 10 years) I will appreciate any and all advice. Thank you!

  1. I’d probably just upgrade the shock to something current that’ll fit that frame. Fox/ rockshox are quality

Upgrading it would be the best BUT those are proprietory shocks. Not even eye-to-eye length will fail you but the lower part is direct mount to the yoke and will not accept any other shock whatsoever. There were shocks like the Monarch Plus with that mount around back then, i would be surprised if you found one now.. But if you do it should be cheap.

Edit: i had overlooked the pic and freestyled it from memory of my 2012 Stumpy Evo. This shock does not appear to have the same lower mount with the longitudinal bolt. If it is still a 197 eye-to-eye length it will be all but impossible to find replacement.

  3. 7.5×2” (191×51) Monarch RL C2 should fit that vintage. You may need spacers as the original spacers/bushings may not fit the new shock. Although that is a custom size shock the Monarch usually fits as it is real close. Check your clearances, travel and so on. I doubt that is direct mount to the yoke if your shock is like the one pictured, that is not a direct yoke mount.

Monarch isn’t a great shock, but sometimes you can find a good deal.

You can also have Risse rebuild your brain shock, problem is when it fails again you are stuck sending it back to Risse again. Easier to just go with a standard shock you can rebuild yourself or locally.
