Hello, I'm looking for some advice on the feasibility of my route from Freiburg in Germany to Ljubljana via Austrian Tyrol and Italian Trentino. I'm happy with the route itself but have some questions on cycling this in April. Hoping someone with similar experience of the region at this time might have some advice?
The section of the route I have questions on is broadly as follows:
Feldkirch->Innsbruck via Arlberg pass, -> over the Brenner pass and turning east to Brunico -> to Lienz -> to Weissensee park -> down to Tarvisio and cross into Slovenia from here
- It looks like most of the passes in Austria don't open until May at the earliest. Passes on the route are the Arlberg and Brenner – these look to be open in April. With most passes being shut at this time though, is there a general risk of frequent road closures in this area at this time of year?
- Would it be generally inadvisable for dangerous weather for bicycling at this time of year?
- Anyone who has made a similar journey from the Black Forest to Slovenia – did you take a route similar to this?
My main concern here is the weather making the route unfeasible. To my research it looks like a fine route to me but I'd appreciate anyone's experience on it.
I'll be taking a gravel bike and for most of the route sticking to asphalt paths or the road.
The route as it stands is 500mi/800km and I'd expect it to take me maximum 3 weeks. This is part of a larger trip.
