I bought this 26" Scott (unknown model) MTB with a Bafang motor and half decent specs – 1×9 Deore groupset, Lekkie ring 42T, Suntour fork with lockout and hydraulic brakes.

So far, I installed a Brooks saddle, changed the knobby 2.5 tires to Continental Contact 1.5 slick tires and installed bar extensions (not great with gloves in winter) from my parts bin.

What can I do to make it more commuter friendly and comforting? Any suggestions for handlebar and pedals, maybe change to a rigid fork?
I'm also thinking of adding a rear pannier with a seat for my toddler which will also double as a luggage rack.

  1. Hell yeah, B-17 classed that up.

How wet can your commute get in … Maryland? On this sub, the answer is always fenders.

How dark? Would a light be welcome? or even just some reflective tape?

How haul-y? Yes to that rack and pannier.

Okay, you asked about comfortable contact points, specifically, so …

Handlebar: are the bar extensions “not great with gloves in winter” because of grip? I worked some Sugru (color-coded, natch) into thin rings and pressed them around my bar ends for tactile wins. But even a tube from that ample parts bin of yours could check frictive and (vaguely) cushioning boxes.

Pedals: campus? platforms? Kinda feel like shoe preference will have something to say …

Fork: I guess I misunderstand your goal here. If you’re ISO comfort, is any rigid fork going to beat the Suntour suspension?

Racks and fenders, lights front and rear. I run panniers on the back rack, because it gives me the ability to carry tools, lunch, coffee, and this time of year I wear lots of layers.
