Picked up this bike from a friend today. I believe it’s a 1992 model. Going to rebuild it from the ground up to be my first gravel bike.
Question 1: What’s the best way to remove and fix the small rust spots on the frame, while saving the paint?
Question 2: 1x or 2x crank? I want this to be comfort minded. If I wanted to kill myself on a bicycle, I’d ride my road bike as fast as I can for a few hours.
Question 3: Is the front fork chill? Why would I want to replace it if I did at all?
Planning on running gravel drop bars, and 26×2 tires if they fit. Want to do some light bikepacking and overnights this summer.

To add, I’ve never built a bike before. I hardly do any maintenance to the bicycle I have. But I figured if I build my own I would be more attached and learn how to do it better. I have a friend who builds bikes, he’s going to help and point me in the right direction.
It takes 700c wheels/tires, not 26″. I’m guessing that picture shows 29″ tires, surprised they fit honestly.
The fork is 1″ threaded with canti bosses, not an easy fork to even attempt to replace these days.
