My niece turned 11 on Thursday so on Saturday I took her to the local bike co-op 2nd Cycle to pick out her first non-kid’s bike. She had some sporting good store single speed bmx thing with coaster brakes that wasn’t worth trying to maintain and she was rapidly outgrowing. This was her first bike with gears and hand brakes. We found a Trek 820 that fit her really well. The shop let us test ride a couple options in a parking lot out back and then we went and bought a bunch of cute accessories and a new saddle from Opalescent Cycles (thank you Adriel). Then we went on a ride to my friend’s place who lives nearby that had tools for us to change the saddle, sticker up her Safety Pizza, and add lights and cable cherries.
The bike already had some cool Velo Orange bars with fun accented pedals and grips but I’m excited to help her continue to make other own with a rack and basket and maybe some other cargo options like a stem bag.
Long may she xbike.
