I finally strip down & clean up this old steel MTB.
I just finished to scrap the rust.
Next step is anti rust coating, and buying everything to rebuild it.
What would you recommend?

I want to make it a reliable all year commuter, with an occasional 20ish easy mile ride with family or friends that don't really bike.

The seatpost and saddle are fine so will keep them for now.

I was looking at sensah MTB groupset for 1*7 or 9 speed. Any opinion on it ?

With brand new v brakes. If you have some to recommend I'm interested.

Straight bars but no idea what. (The old ones are reusable but the pads were melting on it so it's a b*tch to clean it up)

A new bottom bracket.

I need new wheels too.

Then cables to connect everything.

I think I'm done. Am I missing something?
Looking for any suggestions feedback and recommendations.

Thanks !

  1. Groupset depends on the wheels you get. You’re limited to 7s with older 26 wheels. Look for a wheelset with a 10s shimano freehub and double walls. I haven’t run Sensah but I like my Advent X. Also look into Deore and Advent (9). If you’re on a budget, old used Shimano MTB 6/7/8/9 derailleurs can be easily set up for 9 speed.

Get a new (legit) chain and cassette. Off-brand cheap 1x narrow-wide chainrings have worked fine for me, just make sure it matches the crankset you choose and that the chainline is decent.

For new budget commuter wheelsets I like the Velocity Cliffhanger or Alex Adventure 2 rims. Look for some laced to Deore or better hubs. Used wheels are pretty good to if you re-lube them, but you’re often limited to 7s.

Tires? For commuting I’d probably run Panaracer Protite or one of the Schwalbe Marathons. Maxxis DTH and Schwalbe Billy Bonkers are faster, but way more puncture prone. Gravelking SK, Continental Race King, or Maxxis Ikon if you expect more dirt.
