  1. I can't tell you how much I'm bothered by tarmaced cycling lanes. Yes, they are comfortable, sure. But my business is cables and pipelines and providing for them within our roads. Downtown you always have sidewalks. Outside municipal borders you don't. And there's less and less room to play with every day. A comfy cyclepath is nice but it does cost us. Where is your watermain going to go? Or your 25kV electricity? Or your waterbased heating system? Not under tarmac, the tarmac won't last a week until they have to break it up. All those lines need servicing.
    It's a major headache by now, it's getting crowded.

  2. The country of the Netherlands is divided into provinces. One such province is called "Utrecht". The capital of that province is (also) called Utrecht.
    Voetganger = pedestrian
    gebied = area
    So voetgangersgebied (it should ONE word!) means an area meant for pedestrians, but cyclists are allowed.
    "geef voetgangers de ruimte" means "give the pedestrians some space"

  3. Utrecht is both a province as a city. It's the same as New York and New York city.

    Also, Veenendaal was voted cycling city of 2020. So that doesn't mean they're still the cycling city.

  4. You are fast, you already found a video…surprised your eyes are not square yet! Dutch saying: "Vierkante ogen krijgen" (getting squared eyed from watching tv or a computerscreen for too long).
    How many hours a day are you watching and commenting?
    Don't get me wrong, not complaining, when I wake up, I watch Itz Sky first (energetic guy) and then go over to see if you say something interesting about my own country.
    Being Dutch and learning through your channel, how crazy is that 😂

  5. About 10 years ago Groningen was ahead in cycling infrastructure, other city’s were just catching up. In the video “Groningen: The world’s cycling city” (English subtitles) shows what they did.

  6. In the Netherlands there are 2 provinces with a capital with the same name. So there is a province Utrecht with it's capital city Utrecht and province Groningen with it's capital city Groningen.
    Voetgangersgebeid means pedestrian area

  7. Don’t know if I posted this before, but the video “cycling to school” of this channel BicycleDuutch is one of my favorite videos. In the video kids are biking to go to school in Culemborg. It starts with the children that lives the longest distance from school. Then other kids join in. It’s like a river growing.
    And it’s one of the most Dutch things I can think of.
    The video wouldn’t have looked very different in the time I biked to school decades ago.

  8. Utrecht is a province and a city, just like Groningen is a province and a city. The provinces are only a bit bigger then the city's Strange right? 😉

  9. "Geef voetgangers de ruimte" is a message to the people on the bicycles "give pedestrians space" so actually saying watch out people walk here as well.

  10. With the danger this answer already exists: The Fietsstad Election is a bi-yearly election in which inhabitants of a city can nominate their own city for the prize. There is also something called the Copenhagenize Index which mostly names Amsterdam (sometimes Utrecht). Also: every province has it's own capital with the city of Utrecht being the capital of the province of Utrecht (like Amsterdam is the capital of the province of North-Holland). Also 😀: voetganger means pedestrian (Geef voetgangers de ruimte = give pedestrians some space). Cheers. Nice deepdive.

  11. Gekozen worden door de fietsersbond als beste fietsstad is eigenlijk een compliment voor het stadsbestuur. In 2021 was Zwolle beste fieststad. Voor 2024 is hij nog niet bekendgemaakt.

  12. Utrecht is also a province. And the province capital of this province is the city Utrecht.

    The same goes for the province Groningen. The capital is Groningen.

    The remaining provinces have a different province capital. For example North Holland, the capital is Haarlem.

  13. Utrecht City is the capital city of Utrecht (the province). Like Washington D.C. is the capital of Washington State. 😊
    Veenendaal is a city in province of Utrecht.

  14. The site of the : Fietsersbond (Cyclists' Union) states the following:
    The ranking was compiled based on the largest cycling survey in the Netherlands: more than 45,000 cyclists gave their opinion about the quality of cycling in their area. This picture has been supplemented with a number of objective factors, for example the amount of separate cycle paths next to 50 roads, urban bedrooms and how far cyclists have to detour to get to their destination. More about the survey and all the data is on our site.(translation by Google)

    So its lagely based on the number of participants, I think that a lot of Veenedalers took part in the survey

  15. The Netherlands' Cyclists Union (Fietsersbond) does a survey each year on the municipality level (not necessarily by town, as one municipality may contain several towns). The worst municipality for cycling is Aalsmeer, scoring just 2,7 out of 5. Lack of direct routes and too many streets with a 50km/h speed limit play a part there. Also, too little is done to provide safe bicycle infrastructure for vulnerable cyclists, like small children and the elderly. Other lackluster municipalities are Hilversum, Doetinchem, Venlo, Maassluis, Gouda, The Hague and Rotterdam. The top ten is made up of: Houten, Noord-Beveland, Zoeterwoude, Schiermonnikoog, Veenendaal, Eemnes, Leusden, Zoetermeer, Tubbergen, Vlieland.
