Karlshorst is a locality in the borough of Lichtenberg in Berlin. Located there are a harness racing track and the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin, the largest University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, and the German-Russian Museum Berlin-Karlshorst.

Sprawling Lichtenberg borough is known for the Stasi Museum, with spy equipment and archives in the former headquarters of East Germany’s secret police, and the Hohenschönhausen Memorial, a former prison now open for tours. The Dong Xuan Center is a cluster of halls full of Vietnamese produce markets, clothing shops, and restaurants. Nearby is Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery, where many socialist leaders are buried.

In Berlin’s east, Friedrichshain has a punky, alternative vibe. Linked to the Kreuzberg district by the castle-like Oberbaum Bridge over the Spree River, it’s home to techno clubs like Berghain. Political murals cover the East Side Gallery, a preserved section of the Berlin Wall. Soviet-era buildings line Karl-Marx-Allee. Indie boutiques and casual eateries near leafy Boxhagener Platz attract an international crowd.
