It's hard to explain how it happened, but my pointer got between the star and the chain. What do you think?
On the plus side, I have a cool blood stain on my bike.
Co worker of mine cut the end of his thumb off while cleaning his chain, rag got sucked up by the cog and took his thumb. Its more common than you think.

I split the tip of my middle finger in half when I lost focus for a second while cleaning the chain. Fixed with surgical glue. I am also an idiot so we have that in common. Blood stain on white frame goes hard.

A Few years back people on the sub were getting fingers lost/destroyed every month, you are in good company

Don’t ever spin the pedal by hand. Always spin the wheel instead. It’s much slower and you have much more torque to control the spin when the shit hits the fan ( what a lovely analogy in that case).
Edit: I hope you are ok, OP, this shit terrifies me since I read about it on Sheldon Brown’s website. I suffer from mild PTSD since I lost a finger to a woodwork machine 25 years ago.

Damn it’s been a minute since the what was once a weekly “drive train ate my finger” posts, welcome back!
Anyways, when cleaning your drivetrain, you always spin your wheel with the wheel, not the crank.

Reason I started using a wire brush instead of a rag. Way too many close calls 😅
