No way! Love Wageningen:3 This is the town I was talking about in last video, it's right next to Veenendaal.
One of the coolest places in the Netherlands, one of the best vibes ever. To those who know: Droevendaal will forever be one of the best places in the Netherlands and I want to visit it again so bad!
Also the Wageningse Berg (funny Dutchies calling hills a ''berg, or mountain in English'') is beautiful. It's 42 meters high and looks over the low country, and the beautiful Rhine river. Also Wageningen in terms of cycling really isn't that bad. Definitely not the worst, i'd say it's mid/to good. They've changed a lot over the years. Even being on the forefront of developments regarding e-bikes on cycling roads, and other mobility concepts.
2:06 The sign, I'm almost positive, says "23 km to Nijmegen by way of the Lexkes ferry" — via Lexkesveer.
6:42 Yes, in The Netherlands drivers must yield to pedestrians on crosswalks. "Drivers" in this case means "anybody operating a vehicle", so cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles and bicycles.
So, in short, Wageningen is not so good for cyclists. Still better than New York though…
Capitulation is like surrendering. So in Wageningen, the Nazi's signed the document in which they surrendered to the allied forces. Which meant the end of WW2.
Maybe it's a mayor with american thoughts, cars have priority and the rest just have to be patient 😉
Hello Charlie. Kristy here. I'm from Tennessee, I currently live near Wageningen, in Opheusden. Wageningen is such a lovely village, we visit there almost weekly. You should visit here sometime. We would love to meet you. And by the way, Utrecht is indeed a province, with Utrecht being the capital of the province. Wageningen is in Gelderland. We were wondering why you haven't visited this gorgeous country yet.. thank you so much for your videos. We enjoy them so much
1:40 capitulation, it basically means surrender
Capitulation = surrender.
6:07 nah that's crazy
I must admit that didn't look all to good but I am not sure if Wageningen is indeed the worst. I have seen similar situations in other towns and cities. But yeah… they have work to do overthere.
it says "Via Lexkesveer". it means using the the Lexkes' ferry between the cities of Wageningen and Randwijk.
I've lived in Wageningen for about 11 years, cycled everywhere and I never felt the cycle infrastructure was bad. Yes, the city is a bit car centric, like almost any Dutch city or town that had to be rebuilt after WWII. The vision of those times put the car first. But in all of those places you see the improvements from the last decades that were made and are still going on according to the Dutch standards of designing roads and streets. And certainly Wageningen is also doing its best on that matter too. So many improvements have already been carried out and with more to come. Just look at the Markt, the Lawickse Allee or Rooseveltweg; so much better and nicer than when I first moved there …
I live in Wageningen. It's not that bad, really. Some of the roads mentioned have already been made in bicycle-roads only. And probably Wageningen has more round-abouts than the USA in total. I don't know why Wageningen has been picked out. Every day there is a car jam through the center of Wageningen, that's true. But it doesn't hinder cyclists. The only thing it hinders is public transport by bus. Wageningen, now-a-days, is far better than the city I grew up in in the 80's. It made huge improvements in the last years.
Enschede is worse too!
It's not voted for by the cities themselves, it's voted for by the Cyclist Union.
I live in the most car centric city of the Netherlands, Rotterdam, but from what I've seen in this video, we have a way better cycling infrastructure than Wageningen.
I live close to the Dutch border in Aachen and directly at the border is the small town of Vaals (population 10.000). I would say Vaals is worse.
It might have something to do with the large number of Germans who live there, taking part in the local elections and have other priorities. May be also because this part of the Netherlands has a lot of hills.
I know why Wageningen wants more and better streets for cars (I live in Wageningen). The university is very rich and very important for Wageningen. It brings lots of expats but also a lot of money. Its all about money and prestige.
Wageningen wants to be the host of the university, so they feel important too. They sold a lot of old buildings to the university. And I even think, the university is the real boss in/from Wageningen. Ofcourse the gemeente Wageningen is never gonna say this is true.
Yet another video https://youtu.be/27U-kBO2bVo?si=SHrR_iA1ZMT0dt69
Maybe the reason why Wageningen is so focused on cars, can be found in the name. Cause wagen means car.
Almere has over 500 kilomeers of bike lanes! The longest over 12 kilometers.
@Charlie, do you know, or have you noticed your mic or anything else in your audio loop or perhaps an interference on it creates a small background buzz?
My town!!! Wageningen is the town where I live! I don't think cycling in Wageningen is bad. 5:10 Beuningplein IS a public space. Several times a year it transforms into a "festival" area. I do not agree with most of the things discussed in the video. Wageningen's infrastructure is the way it is because of how Wageningen was since the old days. They tried to keep everything the way it was as much as possible without changing the city too much. Of course, things have changed over the years. Could they be better, well yes but from my perspective, I can get safely everywhere I want to go. This video makes Wageningen out to be focusing mainly on cars. That is not true. They only show the bad stuff, not highlighting all the good things in our city. Every city has some parts where infrastructure is bad. But if you want to find bad things, you will find it in every city.
I think the mayority of the Netherlands is worst than Wageningen ,i dont understand this video.
The "capitulation" mentioned is the definitive and full surrender of the NAZI troops in The Netherlands to the allied forces.
Wageningen is close to Arnhem, Ede and Nijmegen. In may 1945 the Germans signed a document. A capitulation. In this they told they lost the war and were laying down their arms. It was the moment the war and the German occupation was over for the dutch.
I have been in wageningen. Not a bad town. Has a lot of nice buildings. Just never rode a bike over there. The infrastructure can do for an upgrade. It will. Just it takes time. 😊
In smaller cities nobody uses public transport. Unless you’re a student or can’t afford a car. It’s not easy to get somewhere with a bus and it takes hours. Everybody has at least one car. Schools are placed on places easy to reach by car and by bike. Kiss and drive is common at schools, because mum and dad have to go to work in another town and have to get there by car.
The comment on the car parking finished first: it’s parking for teachers, duhh….. bikes can easily be parked in grass or gravel while the bicycle parking is built, while cars will get stuck in the sand or grass when it rains a lot. Or cause a fire when the grass is very dry and they are parked there.
Zebra crossings only work if people stop! That’s not always the case. Certainly if only once or twice per hour someone wants to cross. People who walk will pay better attention when crossing if there is no zebra making it safer. And in most cases a driver will stop to let people cross as a courtesy in small towns.
The placing of the bus station is decided by the province and they want bus stations near the border of the town at a big road, so the travel time between towns is lower. You’re expected to use an OV bike or your own bike to travel in the city/town when using public transport. All part of the public transportation plans of the province of Gelderland.
You simply can’t compare the traffic plans of Utrecht with the traffic plans in for example Wageningen without taking in consideration how people live their lifes in smaller cities. Our lifes aren’t completely car centered, but we need our car to earn our living.
The university in Wageningen is the best university in the world in agriculture studies and environmental studies.
The Netherlands' Cyclists Union (Fietsersbond) does a survey each year on the municipality level (not necessarily by town, as one municipality may contain several towns). The worst municipality for cycling is Aalsmeer, scoring just 2,7 out of 5. Lack of direct routes and too many streets with a 50km/h speed limit play a part there. Also, too little is done to provide safe bicycle infrastructure for vulnerable cyclists, like small children and the elderly. Other lackluster municipalities are Hilversum, Doetinchem, Venlo, Maassluis, Gouda, The Hague and Rotterdam. Wageningen is considered mediocre. It is particularly let down by its many 50km/h roads, otherwise it is about average as a cycling town.
