  1. I love durable utilitarian bikes, and the Troll/Ogre must be close to the ultimate. I’m too much of a cheapskate to build one for myself, resurrecting older used bikes instead.

For me, it would have slicker tires and long fenders, plus narrower bars for the city, but I have a MTB if I ever want to go off-road.

Though I have been toying with fitting that MTB with fat slicks and a Troll (or other rigid disc) fork, to turn it into a fast rugged street machine.

  2. Nice. If you’re going to have only one bike, and have a budget under $2000, this or the Salsa Fargo (same bike, essentially) is the best route. A friend of mine has a Fargo set up for commuting, but he keeps an extra set of off road wheels and a fox fork, with crown race installed, in the garage. He can make the switch in 5 minutes. It’s a clever system for a dude on a budget with little storage space.

I may not be using the correct terminology here, but why not have a fork tensioner to keep it straight when you’re running panniers? It attaches at your fork’s bridge hole to the downtube and is essentially a spring with tension on it. It looks like you’re running top pull derailleurs so that isn’t an issue.
