I decide to take my bike to Anfield to see what it’s like riding with the fans attending a football match.

  1. I remember in one of your previous videos, probably a year back now, although I’m sure you’ve said it loads of times, you said “driving is a transport not a competition”. I continually say this to myself while I’m driving and it really helps me stay calm, especially if someone does something they shouldn’t and I go to react and risk making the situation worse.

  2. There’s times to be that tortoise in the hare and tortoise race, match day, before/after school and before and after work.
Everybody has to be in the same place at the same time and if you’re the hare, you’ll end up dozing off watching your favourite team, that important exam and your anxiety or that quarter’s meeting with the big boss and you eager to get back to your desk.

  3. Totally agree. Other times large crowds can occur: Christmas shopping on Oxford Street in London or town centres, also a more recent thing is more Protests are happening especially when riding around central London, summer drinking on Thursdays after work around pubs can have lots of people drinking outside the pub or bar spilling on to the street if there's no beer garden or on the paths if on a waterfront. Or if you have to ride later in the evenings in the "going out" part of town, lots of drunk people walking around which makes them more unpredictable.
This is when "slow skills" is important, being able to keep balance when moving very slowly and even balancing for short moments when stopped without stepping off the pedals. Especially if you have clipless pedals as unclipping suddenly can be unsuccessful and you'll fall, which would be very embarrassing in front of large crowds. So I'd coast as much as possible around people poised to unclip if needs be.
And if there's going to be a section very crowded or lots of people moving, you can always walk till you get to a clearer, quieter section to get back on the bike. Which is not something that comes to mind with some cyclists.

  4. "Best flow for everyone" can also be used by pedestrians to allow road users along their way. In the summer, I was walking to Lord's and the crowds crossing a driveway meant a driver couldn't get out. I spotted them from about 50 yards away, but they still hadn't budged by the time I got there. I held up my fellow pedestrians for a few seconds to let them out. After all, you never know if they were a surgeon on their way to an important piece of work.

  5. Looks like normal London on any day. Peds will and do, walk into the road without a care and defy anybody to beep their stupidity.

Best thing to do is get a bike. They have priority over everyone & London peds are used to stepping out of their way or having the bikes career though them without slowing.

  6. Just be mindful even when your walking with the bicycle those foot pedals hitting a pedesterians shins can be painful. Mine has no gears so my pedals spin by themselfs.

  7. I Live in Luton near the LTFC Stadium. And when I have to drive in that area during match day, I have to literally be looking everywhere as fans just randomly start crossing infront of you if you're in a slow moving traffic. Some also park in the wrong place causing obstruction. The area has so narrow roads and worst thing is that most of them while walking in crowded packs, ignore the fact that they must stop at the crossing to let us drivers go ahead when our traffic light is green, but they carelessly continue to walk and I have to stop at the green light and when I'm in the front at the traffic lights, I have to bear the honkings as if it was my fault for stopping. I'm a careful and cautious driver other wise I would of ran in to a little fox running at the cross way. Sigh.

  8. My way of dealing with crowds like that is primarily, don't. If I unavoidably get caught in them – and with my my job, it's usually turfing out time at schools – then your advice is spot on. The ones to watch for are the mindless and the mischief-makers. The first is a risk because they've no idea what they're doing; the second because they know exactly what they're doing. I've had a child run out of a group and sprawl himself across the bonnet of my car. There's a look you can give to that sort of child that conveys exactly how far that's going to get them. It helps if they've seen you in the school. With crowds of adults, you can end up getting your car kicked in (and yourself if you're daft enough to respond). As I say avoid crowds or appear innocuous.

  9. Look at those pedestrians in the road – none of them are wearing helmets and hivis. It's just irresponsible of them. And I bet they don't pay road tax either…

  10. There is a thing called herd mentality [a bit like when animals and birds flock together] where they feel safe because they are assembled in large numbers.
Subconsciously their risk awareness switches off and they become blind to any danger.

  11. I saw a tractor waiting to get out on the A57 rural section nr Warrington., Traffic was busy. I had him in sight for a while and saw he was waiting a while. I asked if he wanted me to stop traffic and also check if it was clear (it was on a bend). I did so and let him out. Only slightly slowed down a car, that was it, and it allowed him. His tractor was towing a big trailer full of pumpkins!

  12. Yes Boxing Day in Bournemouth, loads of people walking on the roads and pavements, over taking the slower peds by just coming out into the road. Go slow!

  13. I've cycled past the PNE ground a few times when the fans are coming out. I now avoid getting into that situation as it is just mayhem. I got off the bike, put my cleat covers on and walked the last time.

  14. I remember making the mistake of trying to drive past the oval when the world cup final had just finished, it was Pakistan vs India!!!! Was quite some spectacle in itself, like being in the middle of a carnival 🎉

  15. This is a much better use of the term "sheeple" than the conspiracy theorist use. they travel in flocks, they just follow the lead sheeple, and they have little awareness of traffic around them, so people trying to get through have to look out for them.

  16. The phrase btw is "at one fell swoop" rather than a fowl swoop. I just looked it up to find out where it comes from – and it's from Shakespeare – Macbeth. And it was used for quite an extreme situation!

  17. I have to deal with this sort of thing once a year in November, as I live just down the road from where they have one of the biggest fireworks displays for miles around. The main thing you have to avoid doing is letting anyone cross in front of you because if you let one person cross, everyone streams across, and you are stuck there.

  18. I used to work as a private hire driver at driving to pick up or drop off through match days were a pain in the back. I used to try and avoid match days, especially Tottenham or Leyton Orient even though work was busy. I found school kids more civilised than grown people, especially after a few drinks who don’t care about anyone else.

  19. The thing at Forest is that the main parking area (The Embankment), is on the opposite side of the river and across that 5 lane road from the ground, so it’s not surprising that everyone wants to walk on and cross the Trent Bridge Road.

I try to avoid the area around the ground around final whistle time. There are only 3 road bridges across the Trent in Nottingham and 2 of them will be rammed with supporters.

  20. 3:00 imagine if that was a peloton of cyclists leaving a velodrome event – riding ten abreast against oncoming traffic! 😱
Would make front page of the DM I'm sure!

  21. I once spent six hours just trying to get out of the car park at Glastonbury. The rain had turned the place into a swamp, and there were people and broken down vehicles everywhere. I would've loved to have got up to driving at walking pace.

  22. I think it would be beneficial in videos like this (especially for mobile viewers) if the front cam was a bit larger. The view of you could be pushed to the right a little to allow for a bigger front cam. I don't think that'd work as well when you display the back cam too but the latter half of this video could have benefited from it in my opinion! Maybe you can find a solution for all 3 cams but a larger front cam.

  23. On the school pickup topic… You mentioned kids. In my experience, its other drivers, usually women (presumably the mothers) that are the biggest hazard. They're not stopping for anyone other than their child. And when they do stop, legal stopping places arent a thing.

  24. The place where I drive on a regular basis and is that crowded is Stonebow, in York city centre, I drive buses through there several times a week and the amount of people who just stand in the middle of the road to take selfies or even just stand and talk is ridiculous. I had a trainee driver with me last week and she was driving and we drove down this road and she saw how busy it was and she just froze and had a mini panic attack on me. Luckily I was able to talk her through it and get her to the next bus stop where I swapped with her and I drove back whilst she calmed down. Only the second day in the job so didn't want to overwhelm her, but went back the next day she drove and had no problems with it.

  25. I cycle a fair bit, and it's shocking how little awareness some pedestrians have on shared cycle paths (same can be said when walking in supermarkets/shopping centres, people just don't look). It used to annoy me but now I take the same approach as you Ashley. Look out for those more vulnerable than you, and look out for those who aren't looking out for themselves. What still kind of annoys me is that people are perfectly capable of being aware of their surroundings, yet it seems like they just can't be arsed to. Another great video, all the best for the year ahead mate 👍

  26. I remember Sid James riding a Chopper wearing loafers and smoking a pipe, and then I look at cyclist wombles today and I wonder what the hell happened.

  27. love your videos and all, but to see thousands and thousands of pedestrians and four lanes of road occupied by maybe a handful of people in a car and to conclude that cars should have priority, is pretty out there.

  28. I remember during the Euros 2020 (or 2021 because of Covid) and I decided to go for a practice drive for my part 2 on the evening of the final. My theory at the time was that the roads would be quieter because everyone is either at home or at the pub watching the game, and boy, was I wrong.

I was near a pub and a bunch of drunken fans were holding a flag across the road chanting "ENGLAND" at passing cars. It was at that point it occurred to me that there might be a surge of drink drivers and unpredictable pedestrians to contend with after the game is over, so I decided it was best to avoid the roads and go home.
