This was filmed just over a year ago in Calp, Spain. This crash came out of nowhere and I still say there was no reason for me to lose traction there, but if you ride bikes long enough your crash card is going to come up every so often.

  1. from the looks of the video, it seems like there may have been a slight gradient change in the road which transferred the weight off the front tyre momentarily.

  6. I was surprised and amused by your reaction SAFA. I was cycling downhill on ice patches yesterday & expected to go down, happy when I didn't. So your crash 'should' not have occurred, but must own up I would also have started angrily blaming inert things.

  7. The moisture from the asphalt evaporates even if you can't see it.The tyre temperature get cold for a second and that’s the result.The asphalt is hygroscopic 😉

    Spain seems to be full of joy for road cyclists.
    In corners like these I ask myself twice,
    if my tires have good grip or not.
    Is my weight distributed correctly at every turn,
    or will I slip?
    I also had few crashes, one of them ended up injuring my right arm (sliced open, which is a scar today).
    I'll accept this scar with LOVE because road cycling means everything to me as much as it does to you.

  9. Bad to crash. But it was a graceful fall. Thanks for sharing the video. I’m learning from your experience. What’s the damage inventory (bike and body)?
    I noticed you slowed down a lot when you first saw the wet sections. Strange you came off where you did. Happy you are ok😅.

  10. Frost heave. At least that's what we call them here in the NE USA. But where there's no freeze/thaw there can be water under the road surface disrupting the bed.
    The road bed freezes and thaws and flexes the asphalt and eventually cracks and worse. It was no coincidence you lost traction where there were cracks. Not that the cracks caused the crash, but they indicate an unevenness in the surface. Pushing the limits of your tire traction it takes very little for the friction to break.
    Glad you're OK. I'm very familiar with this and much higher speeds in mountains and now at an older age still like to have my fun, but give myself a bit more margin for error.

  11. I do not know, if it is out of yours videos that you're making your money ! You're indeed quite talented, but you're living a very dangerous life. I am an old guy of 70 , i am a cyclist 8000k a year, a motorcyclist and i am still driving a truck ( a semi ) 3 days a week, up north in Montreal. I saw a lot of crazy stuff on the road. And did a lot of it myself…while ago ! Young man take care of yourself, there could have been just a small Volvo in that bent ,enough to kill you, or worst , leaving you crippled till the end ! Glad that nothing seriuos happended to you anyway !!

  12. it's unusual that you haven't fallen before, because considering that the entire road is made of white asphalt, which is made of limestone, which polishes very quickly and becomes slippery even on dry surfaces, and at the same time absorbs grease/oil, which when wet comes to the surface and even more increases slipperiness. there are a lot of such roads in my country and you have to be careful because such asphalt is often only in the bend. even WRC drivers complained about the slipperiness and asked for advice on how to drive on asphalt with "1000 shades of grey"

  13. I think the track conditions weren't the best, dry to wet is not the best combination for the tires and also the asphalt changes too 6:05. BTW, the worst place to stay after a crash is the closest part of a curve without visibility, so dangerous.

  14. Once I fell in a roundabout at 30 km/h, I'm sure there was something on the asphalt that made me slip like water, oil or gasoline leaked out from a car before.
    I didn't even have the time to react, I found myself sliding on the ground.
    What really made me piss off was that there were 4 cars about to enter the roundabout as I fell and none of them checked on me.

  15. 6:56 I looked at the fall, the type of asphalt is uniform, the humidity is also, the inclination of the bike is approximately constant, but in the place where the wheel slipped, there was a transition from a slight depression to an uphill, and thus the inclination of the wheel in the contact with the surface virtually changed, so there was a slip because you were constantly on the verge of slipping and there was no reserve to avoid slipping, just before the fall you can see that you come across a part that is raised – you can see a shadow and the asphalt has cracks on the right side. there is a general rule that, if you follow it, protects you from falling/running off the road: the length of the road you see in front of you must be sufficient for you to stop firmly, which is not the case with you even after falling

  16. Many thanks for publishing this video, really appreciate. This is important to all of us to remember that there are limits of the grip and even when you're genuine master – there is always a risk that something can go wrong. And the results may be very, very painful.

  17. I had a crash in a same decent on my fixie,10 days ago. I can't ride my bike yet and watching this video was kinda exposure trapy for me. Coz I know I can't stop myself descending mountain roads like this with no brake in the future.
