I have a short list of favorite operas, Der Ring doesn’t even feel like it belongs on the list… it transends the list. The opening to Rheingold and the closing of Gotterdammerung are my two favorite musical moments in opera. Perfect way to begin and end an epic.
I watched recently the Tolkien bio-pic, and there is a scene where he takes his girlfriend to see the ring cycle because she is a Wagner fan. I thought it was so funny because they depicted them showing up at an evening performance and I was thinking: isn't the ring cycle about 14 hours long? Why are they starting at 8pm 😂
