I'm very new to the Clipless World. I've been having trouble using my Bontrager Rally Mountain Shoe. I am using a Crankbros Mallet DH pedal.

I've only had success stacking (what I believe to be) an absurd amount of spacers. I have stacked 4 spacers (red) to achieve a successful engagement.

I've done a lot of research and come to the conclusion that this is the best I'll get. I've heard about shaving down the tread of the shoe, but I'd rather not

  1. Those SPD spacers are not going to work right with CB cleats. They are meant for Shimanos. You really need a Shoe Shield below that cleat, and then spacers below that, likely the same size.

  2. ChutneyRiggins on

Try the Crank Brothers shoe shields. My Shimano shoes sucked ass with my Crank Bros pedals until I tried the shields.

  3. Seems like a really poor shoe design to me. I have the pearl izumi X-alp summit shoes and have no problem with engagement on SPD (XT and XT platform version), also set into the shoe but I guess less. Same with my Giro terraduro.

  4. My experience using CB Mallet pedals with low-clearance clipless soles resulted in decent engagement but the pins ripped grooves and pieces out of the soles of my shoes. You’re better off using egg beaters.
