I have a bike with 40-507 (24×1.50) tires, and I’m wondering if it’s possible to install 24×2 tires instead. The part that confuses me is that the rims are labeled as ETRTO 20” (406×17), but the bike itself is 24”.
Assuming the size moulded into the tire is 40-507, that’s a weird mislabeling. Just to confirm, I would take the tire off, stand the wheel upright, place a level on the top of the rim (and make sure it’s level), then measure from floor to bottom of the level.
Main reason is to check which one of the two is mislabeled. If it’s close to 40cm the tire is wrong, if it’s closer to 50cm the rim is wrong.
From there fitting the extra 0.5″ of tire is a matter of clearance in the frame and that a 17mm internal is a little small for a 2″ tire in modern usage.
