Still a relative newbie to old bikes—excited to learn more from this subreddit.

Picked up this bad boy (girl?) from a yard sale a little while ago and got it into riding condition with some deferred maintenance and parts replacement (I still have all the original parts in a box if that eases any consciences).

SN under the bottom bracket puts the manufacturing date at 1949-1950. What interests me is the head badge. It says “Major” and is upside down.

Did the previous owner reinstall the head badge upside down for some reason? Was the bicycle built at the end of the shift on a Friday or first thing on a groggy Monday morning? I’ve never heard of “Major.” Was it one of the forgotten department store brands?

I don’t have the answers to any of these questions, but I thought you guys might. I’m planning on keeping it to ride, but I still think it’s neat to know little details about its history. Thanks in advance for any knowledge you have to share!
