Also, that design has more moving parts so there is more to wear and go wrong. Supposedly, some of these parallel-push brake arms were more prone to brake squeal because of this.

Because Shimano and Avid answered a question no one asked. And there are plenty out there.
They actually do solve a major problem for me personally, I have a bike where regular arms the brake pads hit the tires while the parallel design solves that.

Not sure if I get the point of it, but Magura hydraulic rim brakes mimic this behaviour (pads travel in a straight line without the rotation motion). They also have no drawback of the multiple linkages and are still produced today, so you can buy them brand new
