I'm riding a 2016 Trek Domane 4.5 Disc (purchased 2nd hand in 2023), upgraded with Hunt Carbon Disc wheels (40mm for road, 8387 for triathlons) and Redshift Sports components (dual position seatpost, aerobars, and Shockstop stem) to suit both road and triathlon use. I use this bike for everything: road riding, turbo trainer sessions, and triathlons, and I'm preparing for 70.3 events in 2025.
After a recent bike fit, we've optimised my setup with a lower saddle height, pedal extenders for better knee alignment, and new handlebars for improved reach. I'm also about to switch to a new saddle, likely the SMP TT4, to further enhance comfort and performance.
I'm now considering further upgrades, particularly:
-
A good triathlon helmet.
-
Groupset/crankset/pedal upgrades.
The current setup includes a Shimano mechanical groupset: Ultegra derailleurs, RS5000 (50/34) crankset, 105 11-speed cassette (11-32), and RS685 hydraulic shifters. I'm debating whether to switch to an electronic groupset (e.g., SRAM eTap or Wheeltop EDS-TX) or focus on upgrading the crankset.
Would appreciate any advice, particularly on prioritising these upgrades and whether electronic shifting is worth it for this bike.
Cheers!
