So I’ve been looking at tyres for a loose pea gravel race in a few months (the seven in WA Aus).
I keep seeing the Tufo Thundero tyres come up here, they seem like a no brainer, test really well on the bicycle rolling resistance website but weirdly I’d never heard of them until recently.
Are they a no brainer tyre to go for or are there better options out there for the pea gravel(ideally 45mm and bigger)? Other tyres I have been looking at are the Schwalbe G-one-R or Conti Terra Speed. As it’s a race I’m after a fast rolling tyre.
Cheers

Tufo makes excellent tyres. Hard to go wrong.
I ran a set all season. They roll well on asphalt, and hookup in the dirt. No flats
No complaints
Good tires, roll fast and the price is right. Although 44mm was super hard to seat on the rims.
Hey there. I was quiet early to jump on the Tufo trend. Got my first pair back in 2021 and ran them for something like two seasons. I was totally blown away by their speed and agility. But it came with a price. The number of punctures I’ve had on the regular Tufo Thunderos are countless. Like really. Small punctures that didn’t seal. Tears and rips. Like getting a flat became a part of almost every ride.
Cannot tell if this is somehow a geographically determined curse. I am in Denmark. We have a lot of flint in our soil. However…after retiring (no pun intended) several Thunderos way to early I decided to leave Tufo behind.
Conti Terraspeed are IMO a bit like the Thunderos. Fast, supple, not very robust.
I like them but not durable enough for my use.
I guess many of us have here been on the same hunt to find the perfect durable fast gravel tyre. Also it seems like many of us has ended up running Pathfinders which are quiet fast and impossible to kill. But also a little bit on the heavy side.
To get to the point; Last year Tufo put out an HD version of the Thunderos; Slightly more heavy than the regular version, but with a stronger casing. I haven’t tried them myself but feel very curious. Maybe some one here can share their experiences with the HD’s?
TL;DR – Check out the HD version.
Another option I thought of, the new Gravel King X1R 45mm? Any good on loose gravel?
