Spent time looking for a gravel bike. Decided to build it myself. Couldn’t be happier. It’s an absolute missile on gravel. I’m road cyclist. My best result is 48h / 1215km solo unsupported.
Wheeltop carbon gravel electronic groupset. GRX cranks with 42 tooth. 11 speed. I have snapped 12sp chain which is bit narrow for me. DT Swiss wheels ER and 45mm tubeless ready tyres with 100ml of SILCA sealent inside. There’s room for at least 55mm tyres. Altho I’m gonna stick to 45-50mm. After that I’ll grab my Kona Unit.
Front rotor is 160mm and rear 140mm. Pretty roadish. I’ll swap 160mm if 140mm isn’t enough.
First I was about to get Niner RLT 9 Steel. Decided to pass. Then test rode Orbea Terra M1team. Orbea didn’t have the bolts for top tube bag etc. Also just 38mm tyres. Also I didn’t like the fit of both M- and L-size frames.
Then I tried Giant Advanced Revolt. Didn’t like the geo either.
The build is complete. Wheeltop gears were easy to tune. No more wires. 20,000 shifts per charge sounds great.
I swapped all the bolts to nylon or titanium to save grams. I ordered some fine tuning stuff.
Anyway once I get to riding. Too slippery right now in Finland. Then I know where to go.
Maybe I order some 50mm carbon wheels. Maybe full internal cockpit. Maybe XT pedals to XTR. Maybe try 50mm tyres etc…
I need to get miles in first. Gonna be great for bikepacking and everything. Anyway the bike is beautiful. The build was pretty easy.
