It was good to see that Liverpool football club have put in some provisions that might encourage people to cycle to a football match.

The game changer for me which enabled me to cycle to work was not the highway infrastructure, but when my employer installed changing rooms and showers. In practice in over 10 years of cycling to work it rarely rained on my journey, however, I am in Suffolk!
That is pretty much how i cycle. To me its all about communication with traffic and if you do that most drivers let you
if its dry, cycle, if its wet, take the motorbike with decent water proofs and get some storage (top box, tank bag, panniers) to put your gear in. the car for you/van for me is too easy to choose on a wet day i find. even though its winter, i am trying to use the motorbike a bit more if its 10 degrees or up, 7 degrees is my lowest i like to go to currently but when i was a teen ager and early 20s, i was all year biker, even at zero i was out on the bike to go to college or work but all short runs, 6 miles roughly to college or work. i do now see the value of an investment, part of me doesnt want the sticky salt they use up here in Scotland stuck to the motorbike as i hate cleaning the bike and it would just eat away at it but the motorbike has its benefits for mental health and enjoyment.
i should cycle more but engines are fun lol
I can't praise the destination 😂 but it's good to see you're more comfortable on the road bike.
Love your comments on mothers. Mine still called me bab, I'm the youngest of 5, till the day she passed, and I was in my 30s. She also knew when I lied about what time I got in after a night out 😂 But it's over 30 years since she died, and there's not a day goes that I wish for 5 mins more with her 😢 Make the most of your parents, you'll miss them like crazy. ❤
Wish I had more time with my mum. She died at 48 when I was 18, in 1978.
Just as I was thinking that your ride would be without incident it got spoit by the close pass.
Haha……. never let a "Diego" by without a dig at Silvio 😂 – see what I did there?
Oof; time to grab my coat.
Try 90psi for our weight
Your new camera gives a great all around high definition perspective for the average viewer. You also have a good mike that produces a good sound quality, all around. Watching on a big screen makes one feel that one is there with you, on your cycling journey.
I see the driver in the ASL was a little triggered by something at 8:52, looked over and saw you then gave a little creep forward 🤷🏻♂️
Re comfort, bigger wheels role over things smoother. Also a good carbon fork can flex a fair bit. Longer seatpost extension too. The rear triangle does not flex much. Bigger volume tyres can add comfort but a lot of that depends on running them at a lower pressure (which they can handle better without pinch flats).
Interesting you talk about Silvio at 12:01, he has been using your voice to narrate one of his videos today.
Looking back on some of his comments, it is amazing how having a poor stubborn attitude inside a vehicle makes that driver the worst thing on the road but the same stubborn attitude on a bike means you are just trying to survive out there or simply teaching others a lesson. I am sure he is a nice person but like so many using the road, needs to look at himself and realise that sometimes, not all the time, he is the problem in some situations. I learned, I still am learning and I am not going to stop learning that it is me, and only me that can make my journey better and myself and others around me safe
What are those bicycles with L plates on there at 20:06? 😉
Ashley, and You should try to use SHORTER stem, I think. Stock ones are always for "racing" position You don't really need, and shorter will be both more comfortable and safer.
When I grew up the cylcing infrastructure was a choice of a road, a fast road or a really fast road. We didn’t have cycle lanes, we didn’t have shared paths. If we used the pavement to aid flow of traffic then we would drop down to almost walking pace and most drivers would give space.
The problem with some modern infrastructure is false security. A painted cycle lane give some drivers the false security that cyclists are safe in “their lane” and shared paths with dividing lines give some cyclists false security that pedestrians should stay on “their side” so all will go faster without mich space. Please note, I say some and not all.
The next problem with some modern infrastructure is it creates a false divide where some drivers firmly believe cyclists must absolutely and unequivocally use the cycle lanes if it is there and any refusal to use the lane is a personal attack on their use of the tarmac ahead of them
For me, any infrastructure should be either fully segregated where possible or it should be used for safety only…ASLs, a filter lane for 300 yards towards traffic lights. Speaking of safety, can councils stop putting up, and please remove any existing painted cycle lanes on roads that are just wide enough for a vehicle and cannot support a cycle lane and car lane? That it asking for trouble with some
Good to see the bike racks and suitable parking spaces for the bikes. Do LFC have public showers for use on match day should fans wish to cycle to the match? I think that should be added to cycling infrastructure in places. Motorway services have showers…why not central train stations for communters as an example
I ride with 90psi trye pressure on my road bike, and yes get those clipless pedals fitted 🚴👍🏻 Tour De France, here you come 🚴😉🚴
You need to cycle in some traffic, to gain some experience. Its looks like Christmas Day morning.
I wish they'd let ebikes go up to 20mph. So much safer when you can be closer to the speed of traffic.
About the tire pressure: I was surprised you mentioned you rode it at just 45 psi. I make sure my front wheel never goes under 60 psi for safety. I know that with the 20" 42mm wide Marathon Racer on the front of my recumbent I can survive some absolutely horrible pothole or other similar hard ridge impact and not get a snake bite puncture. Below 60 it gets uncertain. I might be a bit paranoid about that because a snake bite played a big role in the accident that crippled my ankle forever. But I think this safety aspect should be factored in when experimenting with tire pressures.
I never tried it but I am told that tubeless tires can be safe at lower pressures and it kinda make sense they would be more resilient to snake bites.
I really like this new camera mount.
19:57 I hope that we never see you and your Elizabeth out behind this bike shed. 😋🤭
Get some nice, bright, daytime-visible, lights mate. I won't cycle on any roads without them working. The rear red light, visible from a long distance, is the most important.
I have to say I’d love to be able to do more leisure activities and take my bike either to the transport stop or have storage at my destination and away from prying eyes, the lacking facilities St Helens has to offer really shows
I reckon a bike fit. narrower handle bars so that your wrists turn out, less. Maybe! they seem wider than your shoulders. Left knee aligns wider out than the right I think!
So I would be interested on your views of how you find a good bike fit..
Your commentary is, as always perfect. Valuable instruction.
I'm like you. I grew up on the roads as is. It is a skill that cyclists do need to learn! You are part of the traffic at the end of the day. So learning that skill is a really big deal. As important as drivers needing to drive around cyclists!
At 16 yrs old I cycled the old A5 between Shrewsbury and Wellington, each way daily. A crazy idea now a days. But, I'm still alive to tell the tale. Not because I'm a great cyclist, But because roads were shared. A level of shared skill I guess. There was not the conflict that exists today. I don't think that separating 'road users' helps in the over all scheme of things!
Been cycling all my life. I am now 58 and still cycle everywhere. The health benefits are endless. People 10/20 years younger than myself who do not cycle are unfit, overweight and no idea how to change. Cycling also has benefits on mental health, not myself but I deal with MH issues in my job.
Unrelated but silly-o diego is an utter clown. He clearly cannot handle an ounce of criticism towards his cycling, let alone from you, so he responds by editing segments of your voice over other cycling clips of his, to manipulate his viewers into thinking he's always right and you (and all other critics) are always wrong. How childish and pathetic. Some people, especially content creators of this kind, can simply not be reasoned with no matter how hard one tries. Whenever you try to explain what he did wrong or what he could do better next time, him and his cowardly fans will be quick throw all kinds of insults like "troll", "victim blamer", etc. instead of trying to prove you wrong.
I wish my mum could ring me.
If that is how quiet the traffic is on a match day and only your second ride on a road bike, then I think you need to come up to London and try riding during the rush hour before you criticise Silvio and other riders. I am more than happy to meet you one morning to ride the 200 mile commute I used to do every morning. Start at 7:00.
The kind of roads I'd never ride on except on a Sunday (Live in Sheffield).
Hats of to you for showing us your learning curve in this.
It's a bit difficult to tell with a 360 camera, but do you have a front light on and a bell. I know neither are required, but a light helps you to be seen (although with light traffic as you had there one is only needed to get into the habit of turning it on), I am assuming your rear radar has a permanently on red light.
It's alright on a Sunday with not much on the road. With more cars on the road overtakes are closer, esp when there is oncoming traffic. Add rain and car drivers seem to lose a lot of visibility. Higher speed fo vehicles adds another dimension.
You'll Never Cycle Alone with this one Ashley.
But certainly agree with the communication we as cyclists can do with othe road users, making our intentions clear while being courteous helps everyone.
Excellent vlog, thank you Ashley. The views with the cameras in conjunction with your commentary is a good example on reading the road ahead and keeping safe on two wheels.
Did I hear correctly at 8:06? “Good overtake by the Audi.“
Good to know that there are more of us!😂
They say "golf is a good walk spoiled"; is this "football is a good bike ride interrupted"? 😉
To help with not getting a cold try wearing a snood around your neck, or making it feel worse when you have one. Wear one all year round regardless as to the weather. I pull mine up a little so that it sits under the helmet strap when its fastened. Really does make a difference when breathing in through the nose and then out the mouth. Yeah, sometimes they get a bit damp from sweating but no harm in taking another in a bag/pocket and changing it for the return journey.
