Got this ding from mountain biking today on the rear wheel (Velocity Cliffhanger). Tire won’t hold air as tubeless or with a spare tube. Is it salvageable or is it time for a new wheel?
Can’t quite tell from this angle, but if it’s not really dented radially you can usually bend the sidewall a bit and make it work. But based on that bubble-looking spot closer to the spokes, I suspect you’ll now have a flat spot. 🙁
Wow, that’s hardcore, though I’m surprised it wouldn’t hold with an inner tube. I’m assuming it’s the rear…I would definitely replace if you’re running rim brakes, with disk you can probably finesse it back enough (with a piece of hardwood and a deadblow hammer) to run with tubes. Either way the trueness of that hoop and therefore the spoke tension is now compromised. Some folks might say it’s a structural issue but I would disagree, assuming that you’re running <35 PSI

I had a very similar experience…twice…with velocity rims. I’ve since moved to carbon and inserts and have had no problem on either my mtb or gravel bike. That being said, I’m a 250lb rider.

You could see what you could get out of it by bending out the apex of the bend. Use an adjustable wrench or a Knipex plier-wrench. Be prepared for it to break. Doesn’t need to be perfect, just need to turn the big ding into a little one. If you’re accepting of taking some risk it’s probably fine to do that for a few rides while you wait for a new rim to drop on.

It’s a rim brake surface. That one is for the bin if you like your teeth.

You can pound that out. Block of wood in a vise. Inside of the rim goes on rim. Soft face hammer hit on the outside.
