I've replaced many Shimano shifters before but twice now the cable has become jammed inside this new shifter when the tension was low. You can see how the cable "heads" are getting bent.

The first time it happened while my son was trying to fix the bike for his friend.

We removed the cable and I installed a new one. While testing it out and rapidly shifting between gears on probably the 10th shift or so the shifting jammed up again. It was hard to get it out but we managed.

This is a brand new shifter though it's probably the cheapest one Shimano makes. Is this common or is there an absolute minimum tension that has the be on the cable at all times to prevent this from happening?
