I was part of a relay team for a IM 70.3 this weekend. Had my bike in full TT setup for the 90km ride. Around the 2/3 mark or so I cooked it into a corner. Was late braking but not locking up the wheels. Going through the corner I knew it would be borderline to make it through when I suddenly felt my back wheel lock and slide. I abandoned making the corner, got the bike upright and committed to riding through the ditch. Bounced my way through letting the bike naturally slow down and carefully brought it to a driveway to get it back on the road and check the bike over riding slowly. Everything felt and looked fine from the saddle so I went back at it. Finished my part of the race and left transition to cheer on my teammates.
After awards I went and grabbed my bike and found this on my back tire. I feel like I lucked out surviving the last 1/3 with that and still pushing as hard as I did. Can't say I noticed anything too odd, on occasion could feel a vibration but not all of the roads were that good. All I know is I'll have to buy a new one (GP5000 TT) and this one maybe has 500km on it, but was very fast compared to my old tires.
Any thoughts on if something else could have caused this patch to form? Tires are run with TPU tubes at 90 PSI.

That’s not abrasive wear from skidding, that’s a tear. Something on the riding surface dug into your tires and peeled away the outer layer. Multiple something would be my guess judging from the scalloped gouge right in front of the main failure.
This can happen with Contis if they are already slightly worn. In my experience, they are quite susceptible to form patches like that.
