I have never used a hub transmission bicycle and so I have no idea what's wrong with it.
First gear works perfectly, yet it struggles to catch onto second and third. Second works okay if I hold it in the middle but the moment I let go it jumps to third. When it's in third sometimes it catches onto third gear, sometimes it just becomes neutral.
I don't know if I should tighten the gear selector thing in the back or loosen it, for now it's approximately in the middle.
Any help would be highly appreciated.

Sheldon Brown’s site has detailed and excellent information—better than I can offer.
In third, the shift cable should be just slack. If it’s too tight it won’t go into 3rd. Seems like you need to loosen the cable slightly
Spray it all with lubricant and it’ll come good. These old ones last forever with a clean and lube.
There are lots of tutorials and videos online, but for this kind of Sturmey Archer 3-speed the trick is to put the shifter into the “2” position, then adjust the cable tension so that looking through the hole in the side of the axle nut you can see the little shoulder of the actuator rod is level with the end of the axle:

Nevermind I sprayed some WD40 on the shifter and it latched onto second, all is good now, thank you all.
