Can someone explain to me what happened so I can avoid this in the future? 🙁
This is a Specialised tyre with self sealing tube inside. I think pressure was a 80-90 when I last rode it 3-4 weeks ago. It has just been sitting by my garage and hasn't been used. I didn't notice when it happened

This is the position the bike/tyre was in – the rupture did not happen while in contact with the ground.
Tire failure happens for any number of reasons… do you remember running over anything in the road? Was the tire over inflated? How old is the tire? Thankfully a new tire is not expensive.
how old is the tire
Has something chewed it?
What’s the PSI rating for that tyre?
I guess you rode over something big and sharp, like half a glass bottle which cut through the tyre. Tyres usually don’t fail spontaneously without damage and a small 5mm cut wouldn’t cause a failure like that. It’s interesting that you still managed to get home just fine.
