Schwinn’s service department was remarkably thorough, it was a great resource for obscure small replacement parts that would otherwise have been almost impossible to get from Europe. Bike shops would become Schwinn dealers just to have access to the parts catalog, never mind the bikes. Raleigh USA was a distant second, and if you bought a Peugeot you were out of luck.

One thing I remember about being an apprentice in a bike shop was having to disassemble and reassemble a sturmey-archer 3 speed hub. Good times.
