Only if you hit the knife while riding. The tear away in addition to the slice would lead me to think the damage occurred while moving. Rock or rebar is my guess.

Sharp rock, glass, or metal
Foreign_Curve_494 on
My guess is there was damage to the tyre, which finally let go under pressure from the tube, tore, and popped the tube at the same time

A knife would have cut the tube cleanly too, unless whoever did it somehow took the time to not stab too deep.
I think it’s a sharp rock.

The inner tube is cut multiple times. I doubt the tyre deflated slowly. Where do you keep the bike? It looks tampered with imo

Everyone’s saying it’s a rock but this tire is very clearly blooming from dry rot. The way it’s torn is inline with the tire threads that spot was just thinned out and the tube exploded out the side.

That tube would have deflated immediately.

Not sure why everyone here always jumps to “is this hole vandalism?” When they get a flat. You’re way way more likely to get a flat from road debris or crashing.
This looks like a standard sidewall tear caused by a curb, crash or pothole with poorly inflated tires.

No its most likely a think shard of glass, possibly from a wine bottle or something.

No, the side wall is torn. You can’t rip a tire with your hands even if you start the hole with a knife

If it was a knife it wasn’t a very sharp one.

Probably glass….. I just went through this with my bike & it cost me a new tire.
I presume, that knife would do it a lot cleaner and tube damage would repeat damage of the tyre. To me it looks more lika a rupture or a damage from something like a metal scrap or rebar on the road.

Pointy stone sliced through an already weakened tyre side wall (due to age and use). Sidewall failures are quite common.

Quick question. Did it happened when you were not riding for a while? Or during a ride? A hole like that you kind of notice 🙂

That’s a blowout for sure.
Weak spot on the tire finally gave way, the air in the tube rapidly exited the building.
If it were a 100psi tire you would have heard it, but on a 40-60psi tire, you might not.

Tire needed to be replaced before regardless. Dry rot most likely caused this. Highly unlikely that someone else is at fault
I_NEED_YOUR_MONEY on
No, that’s caused by low tire pressure weakening your sidewalls over time. That slice is directly in line with how the fibers of the tire casing are aligned, and when your tire compresses under load it folds along that line, weakening it. Eventually it cracks and tears. Something might have caught it causing the tear, or but it looks more like dry rot. And the tube is just a typical blowout caused by the tire failing.
That slice is how almost all of my rear tires fail – I’m a big guy and I like riding low pressures.

Looks like dry rot on an under inflated tire.
