Hey fellow cyclists! I wanted to share a route planning tool I've been building. It's designed specifically for bicycle touring, with a focus on official cycling routes. I'm a cyclist myself and built this because I wanted better tools for planning my trips. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you give it a try!

What it does:

  • Maps official, signed cycling routes across Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand
  • Shows detailed surface types and road information (hover over segments to see them highlighted on the map)
  • Available in multiple languages (English, German, Polish, Spanish, French)
  • Exports routes to GPX

Two main features:

  1. Route Viewer: Explore official cycling routes on the basemap
  2. Route Planner: Plan custom routes with a touring profile that prioritizes official cycling routes

What makes it different:

  • Heavy focus on official cycling routes (like EuroVelo, Adventure Cycling routes, etc.)
  • Detailed surface type visualization
  • Multi-language support

  1. The idea is nice, but what you have now feels like a low-res version of komoot. It would be great to have an app that has the best routes, not “official” routes. For example, literally today I did one of the routes from your screenshot (goes north from Ljubljana), and it wasn’t a pleasant ride. There was a line of cars behind me 90% of time, and yet it is considered a national cycling route.

Give me safe, comfortable routes with nice views, and not just render data from OSM. I understand it’s more difficult to build, but that would be a game-changer.

  2. It’s a nice site. Looked at my local area & thought “there’s a good one” & “why isn’t that one on it?”

As others have said – Why should I switch from using Kamoot (& Outdoora tive)?

    Maybe the lack of clutter?

Anyway – good effort. Bookmarked. Thanks

  3. Is your plan to only onboard routes from osm?

I see value in having official routes in a service, because these tend to be maintained well. And it’s more reliable than having to trust map data which is not always accurately annotated.

The key is to make sure you have pretty much all of them. Right now, famous routes in Korea or the shimanami kaido in Japan are missing.

  4. I just tested it on a route I did from Toronto to NYC last year and it’s pretty accurate as far as identifying cycle paths versus roads. Great job! It’s not perfect (most of the Canadian portion was actually roads) but it’s a great starting point.
