I didn't see this on the shoulder when all of a sudden my back tire explodes. I thought my wheel failed because the bolt smacked my rear brake making a loud bang.

My best guess, you ran that bolt over juuuuussssst right.
That is a comically large bolt. You had to aim just right for it to penetrate.
