I have been to many shops and none of them did any of those things for free. Maybe there are some jobs that do, but they are probably out of business

My favorite bike shop does minor things for free. It’s a very big shop and they are well organized. They know you will come back for the expensive stuff anyway.

One of the times I got hit I had to take my rear wheel in to see if it could be trued (do all my own work but that truing rims… gonna leave that to the professionals). Damn thing was nearly at a 45 degree angle. Shop did that for free out of pitty I guess, I was impressed they were even able to, would’ve gladly paid at that point.
Bottle cage install for free, sure, but I guess that may be the reason this guy doesn’t work at a shop anymore. Either shut down cause free labor or he was so bad they didn’t wanna keep him around lmao

Bottle cage yes , seating a tire maybe, depends on how much time it takes. Cassette and bar tape nope. Trouble is when you start giving service away for “free” people start expecting more free stuff. Lube my chain , clean my chain , wrap my bars , swap out my cassette, re spoke my rim. To many freebies puts you out of business.

i went in with a brompton front wheel and came out in no time, new marathon top end one, on and straight out in about as much time i take to pump a wheel up, i was gobsmacked, paid for it though like £20 on top of the cost of getting it off amazon and doing it myself.
Well fucking spent i say, i dont even know why i have a puncture repair kit, i could never do it if i needed to, and i have not needed to in 5 years.
Road bikes are okay though you have to learn that.

I’d expect that stuff ‘for free’ if I was getting something else done at the time, or was a well known regular. Expecting busy staff to do labour for nothing when you’re just a rando first time walk in? Nah dude.
