Sorry for the possibly stupid question, this is the only modern bike I've ever had and I don't know how specific I have to be with replacement parts, if possible I'd like to upgrade the chain as I'm replacing it all anyway, but I am clueless about compatibility

Some brands will be compatible with Shimano and some won’t at 12 speed. Get a Shimano 12 speed M7100 SLX Chain
By the book, just Shimano.
The chain brands that don’t make the rest of the drivetrain (eg KMC, Connex) work fine unless using Shimano DCE+ 1x chainrings. I’ve had luck running a SRAM Eagle (non-transmission/flat top), and one customer specifically wanted a campag chain.
Basically all 12 speed chains except SRAM Flattop ones are compatible. The Super Record, YBN SLA and KMC x12 chains actually test more efficient on a dura ace drivetrain than a dura ace chain.
Zero friction cycling out of Australia does lots of chain life and chain efficiency testing. Where I got the above data from.
If you want the best value they even have a chart of km chain life per dollar based on how long they last and Msrp 🙂
You can get higher end 12-speed Shimano chains like the Ultegra or DA if you want to upgrade. Other options like KMC and YBN also have options compatible with your drive train. Just avoid the SRAM flat top chains.
