  1. I replace the tire when I can’t see the notches in the knobs. Or when the knobs start falling off

  2. How old is the tire? There are two factors in replacing a tire – visible wear, and aging of the rubber. Obviously if the knobs are worn down enough you’ll lose traction and that’s a good time to replace – your knobs look to be in OK shape. But also, even if the tire looks decent, if it’s old the rubber can get stiff and eventually break down, which primes you for a blowout at an inconvenient time. I’d probably think about replacing a tire at 5 years, even if the tread is still looking OK.

  3. Man I end up ripping all my side lugs off before my center lugs get anywhere near that worn…..wish I could get 1k miles out of a tire

You’ve easily got another season on that tire man. Save your bucks for suspension service and ride on!

    Meh… how does it ride?

I tend to replace the rear when I start to lose traction, or am wanting more. The leading edge of your center knob is pretty much gone (which is the back of the knob when viewed from the top of the bike). This is from breaking. Do you feel like you are lacking braking traction? Do you want more braking traction? If so, sure, replace it. If not, just keep riding, its fine. Your cornering knobs look to be in pretty OK shape.

I replace my rear tire pretty regularly. I’m riding a lot of steep rocky stuff, so my center knobs tend to lose that leading edge very quick. In that case, I’ll replace the tire when I start to really notice. I’ve also ridden with guys that will run this DHRII down to a damn slick, because they don’t mind the rear end getting all wild.

If you want more traction, replace. If you are find with the way the bike is riding, keep riding it.

I’d probably replace it. Those knobs are getting pretty rounded.

I’d also consider a different tire. I put a Schwalbe Big Betty on the back of my trainduro recently. If you’re not riding lift-served, it’s nice to have something faster-rolling. A lighter casing, faster-rolling center tread and big honking side knobs can be a really good compromise.

  7. This is a personal preference topic. Some people run their tires until they’re slicks. Tires are literally the only thing touching the ground and giving you control, I replace tires often. For me saving a few bucks is not worth risking injury.

  8. I’ve never had a Minion look that good after 500 miles. You’re not very hard on the knobs. Let her rip Bro!

  9. Odd wear – quite worn center knobs so I’d guess lots high speed straight line braking? What’s the compound? If it’s not wet and gnarly where you are I’d say run em.
