How long is a piece of string?

But yes you’ll probably be fine. It’s likely been like that for months before you noticed based on the dirt/corrosion and size of the cracks. Almost every E13 rim I’ve seen is cracked, most riders have no idea. Just don’t mess with it, the worst thing you can do is try to true or tension the wheel.

  2. You could but then you might also only get a few more hours.

It’s just one decent sized pothole away from accident and emergency.

How old is that? I would call that defective or a bad build from the start with too much tension.

  4. Its probably been like that for awhile so probably you can keep going for now. Keep an eye on it.
I recently had a rim which split wide open between three spoke holes and I made it home 19 miles without further destruction.

Be sure to have uber & lyft apps already setup with your card info. Nothing more annoying than starting from scratch when you need a ride “now”.

  6. Same happened to my Syncros rim and i was strongly advised against riding it. The bike mechanics wouldn’t personally ride it, so I took their advise

  7. Realistically, yes, you can *likely* get a few more weeks out of it, depending on miles and road/trail conditions.

[Note: my advice is based on the fact that OP’s wheels don’t take rim brakes.]

The *realistic* worse case scenario is that a spoke will eventually pull the nipple through the rim, causing the wheel to be so out of true that your tire will rub against your frame or fork.

There’s also the extremely unlikely theoretical possibility that the wheel will fail catastrophically to the point where you’ll crash. I have never heard of this happening, buy I’m sure someone here will chime in about how they have a story about a cousin who told them it happened in a town they were in.

Most likely, failure will mean nipple will pull through the rim and you’ll have a very untrue wheel.

    Splitting from tire pressure and volume combining to exceed the rim’s capacity to resist hoop stress ;

Or spoke tension exceeding spoke bed capacity?

    What is your feeling OP?

    Or maybe something else?

Because if it’s the pressure-related hoop stress, consider inflating less, both in the meantime until replacement, and also in the future.

  9. I rode on one like that for weeks cause I didn’t know it was a problem, I survived 🤷‍♂️do what you want with that info I’m not ur dad

I went a couple of weeks riding like that. I stopped when 3 or 4 spokes completely plucked through the rim.

It’s a bad idea to wait as long as I did tho.

  11. I wouldn’t even worry about it if it’s a rear wheel. If it’s the front I’d be a bit more hesitant but as long as you’re not doing anything super high consequence it should be fine.

  12. I’d ride it until I could replace it. Keep an eye on it. I don’t believe it’s going to fail catastrophically but you’re going to start having issues elsewhere, it’s going to get worse, and it’s going to be harder and harder to keep true. Don’t be hard on it and watch your tension.

I probably should add the disclaimer I don’t have the world’s greatest sense of self preservation but it’s my opinion it’s probably not just going to explode on you or anything. I’ve rode on wheels worse than that before and some of my coworkers are riding on wheels like that every day for work. Take that as you will.
