I started riding my 2000 trek 6000 a bit more lately. Does it appear the cassette and chainring need replacing? It’s not always smooth shifting in the middle gears with the cassette.
The cassette looks fine, the chain it’s hard to say without a chain measuring tool which you can get really cheap. The chain ring isn’t shown, that’s the one on the crank.
When a cassette is worn out the chain slips on the cog.
From what you are describing it sounds like it’s the chain jumping between cogs. This means your rear derailleur just needs a little adjustment.

Looks almost box-fresh to me.
