My townie bike (84 Bianchi Sport SS) has Golden arrow shifters on it, and of all four of my bikes with various groupsets, including a 00’s Dura Ace, that is by far the smoothest gear changes.

Out of sincere interest, why don’t you cut the shifter cables?
