Hi,
I am new to biking and am wondering if this Trek Fuel EX 8 17.5 BK is an appropriate size for a 5’5 rider. It is only $300, which seems to be a great deal for a full suspension bike, but let me know if I’m mistaken. I would be driving 1.5 hours to buy it, which is why I’m asking for input about bit. Is this a buy?

It is on the large size for someone your height. Best for someone around 5’7 to 5’9″. The problem with older FS MTBs is that they start needing a full service to perform optimally. Expect a full service to be quite expensive, 200-300 plus parts. That being said if the shocks are still functioning you could get a few to several more seasons out of the bike only dealing with consumables and basic maintenance. The geometry of the bike is dated, MTBs have become longer and have a more relaxed headtube/fork angle.
Price is not far from what I expect for a decade+ old MTB. The value depends on if it is in working condition and does the bike need any immediate service.
