So I’m pretty attached to this bike, but it’s not fit for purpose anymore (awful on hills, breaks are super slow etc) and has always been a bit odd to ride due to the narrow headset. I’ve had the bike serviced before a few times but am wanting to make it a pleasanter ride, and more relatable (gravel bike-esque) . Is it possible? Any advice on doing it? Thanks I’m advance 🚲

Here is some good information to start

The brakes could be replaced with a nicer set of Tektro nutted brakes if you measure the brake reach. The brake levers may be the reason your braking performance is poor. Those brakes came equipped with “safety” levers so novice riders could grab the brakes from the top of the handlebar. Braking from that position always results in poor performance. A set of modern brake levers would be much better.

The rear freewheel could probably be replaced with a wider range freewheel 14-34 tooth freewheel if you replace the rear derailleur.

The crankset might be tricky to replace, as some older Raleighs used a [proprietary bottom bracket](https://www.sheldonbrown.com/raleigh26.html) threading standard. This looks like it might be a later Asian built model, so I would guess it has a standard bottom bracket. If it is standard, you can use a crankset with a bit lower gearing.

Gravel is sort of just a new marketing term for road bikes that can go on some trails, you could do that with this bike. Not sure what width tires you have, but Schwalbe is a good choice.

As for the narrow headset, I am unsure what you mean.

PS -a pic of the drive side of the bike is always helpful
