Hello fellow xBikers! Wanted to share with you all the results of my latest obsession to make a 1 inch threaded steerer with a quill stem adapter look good. Also as a disclaimer… I’m not actually going to finish the build with either of these (I instead bought one of those fancy quill stems with the 31.8 removable faceplate, those look fantastic). This was just an experiment to satisfy my obsession. Safety should always come 1st. make sure that in anything you do you have a safe ride… that your quill stem is inserted at or below the insertion line, everything is secure, etc.
Pictures are in progression of both setups.
First one: using a nitto 1” steerer to 1-1/8” stem adapter. I first put on some 7/8” (internal diameter) shims to make it 1”, then a 1” shim to make it 1-1/8”, added some 1-1/8” spacers.
Also in my box of discarded headsets I found one of these flat & notched headset lock nuts… no idea where it came from. But the threading matched so went with it. Put it all together and it looked pretty good!
Second one: this is a 1” steerer to a 1” stem adapter. And the stem is a 1” CrMo stem. (the CrMo stem is thinner than the alloy stem and just looks better). Then only used the 7/8” shim to fit the 1” spacers snug and put it on with the flat notched lock nut.
The 1” steerer to 1” stem adapter probably doesn’t have much demand and not to often seen? Probably hard to find. Got this from my buddy who did Ironman competitions in the 90s… he had all sorts of 1” threadless stems for his bikes back then.
Anyways, since I spent entirely too long playing around with this, and not even going to use either setup. I just had to share it with you all!

Excess stem length can also be dressed up by using it as an accessory attachment point. I’ve used that space for both bells and bottle cages
