That’s interesting. My 2022 C line doesn’t have one either but that is a lock washer. I never thought about it but I figure it doesn’t need one but now I’m curious if a lock washer would help.
Agree with chr7stopher, that is a lock washer, which is designed with a spring load feature when threaded parts are tightened together. So more recent hub gear Bromptons gear indicator chains have a lock washer as an improvement to reduce the risk of the cable barrel unthreading itself from the gear indicator chain. The lock washer helps with obtaining a finger tight adjustment that stays. The gear indicator chain must be unthreaded from the cable barrel in order to remove the rear wheel, such when the tube or tire is replaced.
No. I had a lot of bicycles in my life with that chain and none of them had a washer there.
