Welcome to Bike Routes of Brum! A channel dedicated to showing safe and quiet cycle routes to cycle around Birmingham!

I’ve decided to take an idea created by @Shifter_Cycling and @NotJustBikes where they play a game of Plus 1 Minus 2 regarding the cycle infrastructure in their respective cities of Calgary and Amsterdam when trying to undertake a simple household errand.

The rules are simple: if you come across something that is positive and good for cyclists, you give a plus 1. If it’s bad, give it a minus 2.

The aim is for cities with good infrastructure to have a positive score and those with poorer infrastructure and bad design to have a negative one.

In this video, we travel from Chamberlain Square in the City Centre to Homebase in Selly Oak. The route I’ve taken is a little bit strange but it was more to get the mileage up and to give a good overview of the types of infrastructure we have.

  1. -25 is a fair assessment of this route and it’s one of the better ones in Brum, which isn’t muy bueno. The maddening bit in Selly near the Aldi/little Tesco epitomises the lack of cohesive design. Great video, very fun seeing some filtered NJB. Wonder what he’d think of Brum’s infra! 😂
