## Discover the Iconic Beaches of Nice

Nice beaches stretch like a necklace along the Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels) from Nice Airport on the western edge to the foot of Mont Boron in the east, covering nearly 10km. The gentle curve of the bay offers a stunning view from Villefranche-sur-Mer in the east to the Esterel mountains in the west. Inland, the terrain rises steadily behind the city, becoming the foothills of the Alps, providing a breathtaking backdrop to the azure sea.

### Nice Beaches: A Pebble Paradise

Nice beaches are composed of large pebbles called *galets*. For centuries, three rivers—the Var, the Peillon, and the tiny Magnan creek—have brought these stones from the mountains to the coast. Although winter storms erode the beaches, each spring bulldozers arrive with new stones to reclaim the beach from the sea. The locals cherish these *galets*, considering them a part of Nice’s natural heritage.

Navigating the *galets* can be challenging, especially when exiting the water. The beach is uneven, often requiring you to climb a mound of pebbles to reach your towel. To assist, the city has installed special ropes on four beaches: Ponchettes, Centenaire, Blue Beach, and Sainte Helene. Just grab onto the rope and haul yourself out!

### Promenade des Anglais: The Heartbeat of Nice

Though the *galets* make long walks on the beach difficult, there’s always the Promenade des Anglais, the 5km beachside promenade that runs along the sea. From power walks to gentle strolls, whether on skates or a bike, experiencing the Prom’ is essential to understanding Nice.
