Hi fellow Brompton riders,

I am having trouble with my derailleur system on my 2022 c-line explore.

The derailleur always wants to default to the larger cog (-) even when I shift to the smaller one (+). I have cleaned and greased the shifter system but it seems to be sprung to go up as the video shows.

Does anyone have any advice on how to solve this issue?

Thanks in advance

  1. If you’re sure the problem is with the “cogs”, actually called spockets, try loosening and tightening the RIGHT shifter cable by turning the barrel adjusters.

  2. Based on your notes and your video, it is probable the control cable is sticking within the housing, such that when you click the shifter to (-), the cable is not releasing the chain pusher, thus allowing the chain to move to the smaller rear cog (smaller sprocket). An immediate step to try, apply a synthetic oil onto each end of the control cable, at the shifter and the end of the housing at the chain stay, meaning at the shifter ( – position), pull the cable housing to expose a bit of the cable and apply multiple drips of oil. Also drip oil at the exposed cable at the chain stay. The oil will migrate the full length of the housing soon or over night, freeing up the sticky cable. Oiling the cable should be performed first, before taking any thing apart or changing adjustments.
