My chain essentially exploded on me under load up a hill today. I didn't think I was that strong in the legs. Hoping the rear derailleur is not bent, but broke the hanger by the looks of it too.

That looks like a KMC chain (that X pattern on the links) – did you by any chance buy this one from Amazon or something worse? There’s a lot of fake ones floating around. The multiple fractures in outer plates are *not* normal.

Looking some more at that last picture – something happened on that bike. Like not just “oh the chain blew up”. There is damage on so many links – even a cheap chain wouldn’t just all of a sudden display all these marks from nowhere.
OP, how long have you owned the bike and been riding it ? The damage to that chain does not look at all right.
chain looks similar to those reported using degreasers like regular simple green to clean their chain. this leads to hydrogen embrittlement
