Enschede is located in the mid-west of the Netherlands, near Germany. There have been three major fires in the history of the city, especially the one in 1862, which almost destroyed the whole city. After that, in World War II, the Allies thought they were bombing a city in Germany, but it turned out to be Enschede. Enschede was the first Dutch city occupied by Germany during World War II because it was close to Germany. Enshede emerged because of the prosperity of the textile industry. However, after the 1970s, Enschede fell into a depression due to the relocation of the textile industry to East Asia. Later, with its efforts to revive the economy, the situation improved.
The old market in the city center has Grot Church and several old buildings, which is a very pleasant square. Enschede is a bustling (student) city. At night, Enschede has many terraces, restaurants and bars around the old market. Ensched is known as the shopping mall of the East, and HJ van Weekplein Shopping Plaza has a particularly large chain of stores and department stores. There are various shopping areas worth visiting around Grote Kerk.
