Postman Mike Sheehan of Goleen, West Cork has been delivering the mail by cycling his 27 mile route for 42 years.
His friends calculate he has worn out a total of 22 bikes, 96 pairs of tyres, 240 pairs of brake pads, and that at a conservative minimum, he has cycled the equivalent of ten times around the Equator, just doing his job.
The mountain terrain makes for some steep climbs and the other two Goleen postmen prefer to use a car or a motorbike. Does this mean it is the end of the line for the cycling postman?

What a beautiful place.
According to the atomic theory he must have been at least 90% bicycle himself. Unless Flann O’Brien was dreadfully mistaken.
A fascinating story. I once interviewed a relative of Mr Sheehan for an article in Ireland's Own.
Think we'll all be back on push bikes they way fuel prices are going
Mike lived over 40 years after this video. He was around 107 when he died. If there is a heaven he probably cycled to it.
Our postman cycles every day in 2022 and he does about 20 miles a day to keep fit!
Sheahan, the Peaceful.
My mother cycled as a post woman up until she retired several years ago

Brings back memories they use to wear the old blue wool uniforms and the post bags were made by prisoners.

Lad I went to school with 40 years ago in Thurles, Tipperary, has been a postman on a bicycle he followed his father who was also a postman, but he isn't the only postman in the area who uses a bicycle… Lots of postal delivery personnel ( can't say postman anymore) still deliver post on a bicycle.
My great grandfather did this in the 30s/40s Newport, Tipperary ☘️ loved hearing the stories from my nanny about being collected from school with his bike.
So that's what a postman is.
Amazing, God bless
Having to stop half-way around to service Mary O'Grady evey day must have been an added strain on the stamina ……………………..
today I heard one woman in her early 20s complaining about the elevator not working because she was not willing to take the stairs to the 6th floor…
One time Mike's bicycle chain snapped in two. Luckily for Mike, Bicycle Repair Man heard his cries for help and fixed it! Thank you Bicycle Repair Man! (Monty Python reference)
